THE OLYMPIANS (2022)
|
A visual development project and my thesis at SVA developing Greek mythology as a story about music, dance, and love in the 1970s. Focuses on the minor goddesses Iris, Erato, and Enyo as they try to become major gods- Olympians. |

(Below) A direct homage to Alice and Martin Provensen's work illustrating mythology. Was conceptualizing art styles for the section in my film that describes the ancient Greek era of Iris' (and her friends') life.
The project in general directly references art and ad campaigns mostly from the 1920s-1970s. I wanted to create a feeling of layered reference to visual culture in parallel to the act of reclaiming of Greek myth by portraying it in the 20th century. For example, the car above is taken directly from a 1970 Volkswagen ad campaign.
(Below) (Right) For the posters, I referenced a lot of 70s graphic design. Persephone advertises cigarettes, and Apollo advertises his exclusive nightclub.
For the map (left), I wanted to create a more abstract concept of ancient Greek locations, mythological and real, referencing Greek pottery and Paula Scher's map pieces. Further below (left), I redraw a moment from The Cher Show, imagining Nike as Cher herself.

(Below) Apollo and Artemis. They're twins. Apollo is at the head of a Studio 54 style nightclub. Artemis doesn't like it.
(Above) Referencing "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves" (1902 film), and Dora Maar's photo "Mannequin-Star".
